Gujarat to get New Breed of Cow 'Dagri Gai'


India is an agricultural country. More than 90% of the country's population is dependent on agriculture. In India, along with agriculture, animal husbandry is also of paramount importance. More than 90% of the country's women are involved in agriculture. India is the world's largest producer of milk. In which mainly milk of cows and buffaloes is an important contributor. In India, a total of 6 breeds of cows, 12 buffaloes, 4 goats, 4 sheep, 4 horses, 3 camels and 11 other breeds have been breeded by the National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR) under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. The state of Gujarat is rich in livestock biodiversity and ranks first among the total breeds of livestock in India. The State of Gujarat contributes 2 breeds out of 13 livestock breeds in the country which include 4 breeds of cows, 4 buffaloes, 4 sheep, 4 goats, 4 horses, 4 camels and 1 donkey. The breeds of Kankraj and Gir cows of the state of Gujarat are famous not only in India but all over the world, in which Kankraj cows are useful in milk production as well as in various agricultural activities and Gir cows are known for their quiet nature and high milk production.

On the initiative of Gujarat Government on identification and characterization of lesser known domestic livestock, in the year 2016-17, Sahajivan Trust, Bhuj and Veterinary College, Anand Krishi University, Anand jointly conducted genetic and external characterization of unfamiliar breeds of livestock. The proposal was submitted to the National Bureau of Animal Resources (NBAGR), Karnal for accreditation. This research was conducted by Dr. Anand Krishi University, Anand at the annual meeting of the year 2017-18 to discuss the planning and results of the research conducted by Anand. That. B. Under the chairmanship of Kathiria, research work on the mountain breed "Dungari Gai" was decided. The genetic and external characterization of this cow was carried out by the Veterinary College of Anand Krishi University in the year 2012-13 and the results of its research were presented at the annual meeting on research. Of these, the National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR), the Government of India has this year recognized three breeds of sheep, Panchali Huma, Kabini, Kahmi and Donkey, Halari, as the new indigenous breeds. A new breed is to be introduced by Anand Krishi University. 

 


In addition, in the tribal and hilly districts of the state of Gujarat such as Dahod, Panchmahal, Mahisagar, Chhotaudepur and Narmada, a small (small) cow breed has been found. Which is known as 'Dungri' and 'Gujarat Malvi'. In the year 2016-17, the genetic and external characteristics of this cow were measured by the Veterinary College of Anand Krishi University in which according to the characterization of the genetic character, this cow is different from other breeds. According to the breed description norms established by the National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR) for characterization of external characteristics, the physical characteristics of more than 300 cows such as forehead length and width, horn length and length, body length, etc. . In addition, the weight of the calves and other breeding characteristics and the agricultural efficiency of the bulls of this breed have been measured on an experimental basis by scientific criteria.

In external features these cows are mainly found in two colors. 

(1) with very white or white color, front and back legs are gray 

(2) reddish color is also found in very few. 

The body of this cow is thin, curved upwards and the tip of the horn is sharp. The ears of these cows are straight and open. The main feature of this cow is short slender legs, body length is more than its height. These cows are a little naughty. The male of this species weighs 3 kg. While the weight of the female is 150 kg. Have. The milk production of these cows is very low at an estimated cost of 300-800 kg. Is equal to. But these cows are more prevalent in hilly areas as they are smaller in size and more efficient for farming operations than other breeds of oxen. In addition, the cows of this breed are mainly adapted to the area as they are dependent on grazing and require very little fodder. 

 


Soon the breed of this cow will be recognized nationally by Anand Krishi University, Anand National Bureau of Animal Genetic Research | (NBAGR) The proposal will be submitted to Karnal through the Animal Husbandry Department of the State Government. With the recognition, this breed of cow will be recognized as the fourth breed of cow in the state of Gujarat after Kankraj, Gir and Dangi, which will be a very important achievement for the state of Gujarat in the field of animal husbandry.
